Sewer Camera Inspection
See inside the sewer line before you decide on a repair, a sale or a city rebate.
When a sewer lateral is cracked along its length, collapsed or made of a material that cannot be lined, replacement is the repair that lasts.
A camera inspection decides between repair and replacement.
A short break is a repair. A line that is cracked in several places, offset at many joints or sagging along a long run is a replacement. Repairing one spot only helps for a little while if the pipe a few feet away is just as bad.
The camera makes the decision clear. A plumber who can show the footage of the damage and explain why a repair would not hold is giving you what you need to decide.
Open-trench replacement digs along the old pipe, removes it and lays new pipe at the right slope. It is straightforward and allows the plumber to correct sags, but it disturbs landscaping, driveways and sidewalks.
Trenchless methods reduce digging. Pipe bursting pulls a new pipe through the old path while breaking the old one apart. Pipe lining coats the inside of an old pipe, but it only works if the pipe is sound enough to hold the liner. The right choice depends on the material, the depth and what is above the line.
Replacement is one of the larger plumbing jobs, and the price depends on a few things that are easy to ask about.
Ask for the quote to list the method, the pipe material, the permit and the restoration separately.
Older parts of St. Petersburg have clay and fiber laterals that have been in the ground for a long time. Under the city's ordinance, the owner is responsible for the lateral inside the property line, and the work needs a licensed plumber and a permit.
After heavy storms, cracked laterals let rain in and add to the load on the system. Replacing a failing lateral helps your house and also reduces what the city has to treat.
Sewer pipe works by gravity, so the slope matters. A pipe that falls too little holds waste, and one that falls too much can leave solids behind as the water runs ahead. The plumber sets the grade and checks it before backfill.
A new line is also a good time to add a cleanout if the house does not have one. A cleanout gives access for future cleaning and camera work without pulling a toilet. The connection at the city main and at the house should be inspected before the trench is closed.
A replacement of a private sewer lateral needs a permit and an inspection, and it should be done by a licensed contractor. The city has offered a rebate program for private lateral work, but terms change. Check the city's page for current rules before you sign.
Most replacements take a day or a few days, depending on length, depth and surface restoration. Ask for the schedule and what happens to sewer service during the work.

Fix a cracked, rooted or sagging sewer pipe, from spot repair to a longer section.
Scour grease, scale and roots from a line that a snake could not fully clear.
It depends on the material and conditions. Clay and older pipe can last decades but fail at joints, while modern plastic pipe is expected to last much longer. A camera shows the current state.
It causes less surface disruption, but it is not suited to every pipe or every site. The plumber should explain why a method fits your line.
Usually for part of the work. Ask the plumber how long water use should be limited and what you should do during the day.
The city has run a rebate program for private lateral work. Terms and eligibility change, so confirm with the city before you start.
Trenchless methods can work from one or two small pits, which may avoid cutting the driveway. They depend on the pipe's condition and depth, so ask the contractor which method fits.
Call and describe the symptoms. The dispatcher will explain how a camera inspection fits in.
